Crown Point Psychiatric / NeuroBehavior Hospital

A new psychiatric hospital for people with severe medical and neurological conditions plans to open in the spring in Crown Point.

NeuroBehavioral Hospital will be located in the former Adam J. Benjamin Veterans Affairs Clinic at 9330 Broadway and have 74 inpatient beds.

The center will specialize in treating mental health disorders in patients with other medical and neurological impairments, including dementia and Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases.

“We’re almost like an ICU for psychiatric patients,” said Christy Gilbert, president and board member of parent company NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals. “Most hospitals actually don’t want to take care of these patients. There’s nowhere for these patients to go.”

She said the company’s other facilities, which are located in Mishawaka, Indianapolis and Bremen, were getting so many referrals from Northwest Indiana that it decided to open one up in the Region.

The company, which is privately held and headquartered in South Bend, typically gets referrals from emergency rooms, acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, adult day cares and nursing homes. Patients generally stay about 13 or 14 days, are stabilized, then returned to the referring facility.

The business opened in 2006, originally as a physical rehabilitation center. “We were receiving a lot of referrals for patients that had psychiatric issues but were medically compromised,” Gilbert said.

NeuroBehavioral Hospital will accept Medicare and most commercial insurers, but Medicaid only as a secondary insurance.
